The Mission Outreach Committee of the Presbytery is responsible for oversight of the ecumenical ministry: the Committee to Aid Refugees (CAR). I am the current U.C.C. representative on the Board of CAR, the mission that "welcomes the stranger in our midst". CAR is an important part of the Montreal refugee network, working with the Canadian Council for Refugees and other groups, as well as engaging in supportive refugee work with the Montreal City Mission. CAR is our link with francophone work on behalf of refugees through their Table de concertation. CAR provides an expertise that is particularly needed in this field of work where powerless, desperate people are in situations which require competent analysis and support..

CAR, created by action of the Montreal Presbytery two decades ago to deal in a structured way with the wave of refugees arriving in Canada from Central American countries, recently provided the coordination in bringing about a safe release of the refugee families in sanctuary in our churches. Some of the current issues CAR is concerned with are highlighted in the accompanying newsletter.

CAR, wishing for a closer relationship with our congregations, is inviting us to become members. I request you, another congregational representative, and/or your congregation to join CAR. Members receive updates on refugee issues and are able to participate in the annual General Meeting in May to meet the people involved in refugee work, receive information and offer guidance. The cost is minimal. We suggest a $10 minimum individual membership, $25 for a small congregation and $50 for a larger one. Donations to this registered charity are also welcome and needed.
