After the closure of the Book Room, members of the Faith Development (then Christian Development) Committee decided, with Presbytery's permission, to open a Reading Room with a starter collection of books. Some of these belonged to present and former Presbytery Support Staff and others which were bought new with some Presbytery funding. This Reading Room was a pilot project, to last for the duration of a year. The Reading Room was for the use of Presbyters or Committee members attending meetings. We asked for feedback, and it soon became apparent that those using the Reading Room wanted to be able to borrow books. So, the Phoenix Reading Room turned into the Phoenix Library.
The Phoenix Library is situated in a former meeting room in the Presbytery Offices. It is a warm, cozy, inviting room, with comfortable chairs, a desk and a VCR. It houses a small collection of books and resource materials These include books and materials on Theology, Congregational Development, Worship materials, Stewardship, Social Justice, Youth and Children's Resource and Devotional materials. There are also magazines and periodicals and the Library was recently donated some videos, among which are a number of videos of the Spirit Connection program on Vision TV.
It is intended for the use of those who might be attending Presbytery or meetings at the Presbytery office. Borrowers will be allowed to borrow books for a period of one month. To keep a record of who is borrowing a book, there is a card tray on the desk in the Library. Each one who takes out a book should take the card from the pocket in the back of the book, write their name and telephone number and the date when they borrowed the book on the card, and place it in the card tray. When they return the book, they find the card in the tray, write the date of return on the card and place the books in the return box. There is also a sign-out book for periodicals and there will also be one for videos, when that is set up.
Since there is no staff there in the Library, it operates pretty well on an honour system. The Library itself is still a work in progress. Changes may be made as we see how it is functioning and find out if there are ways in which it can function better. To this end, we would appreciate comments and suggestions from those who use the Library and there is a book there for comments and suggestions.
